14pt;\"><strong>Punches Full of Peace<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>by Fred Voss<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fist-knocks<br \/>have replaced handshakes<br \/>in this machine shop<br \/>instead of squeezing palms we hold out fists<br \/>and bump knuckles in the air<br \/>between us<br \/>I guess it is a way to say we are ready to fight<br \/>but won\u2019t<br \/>our knuckles<br \/>that could break teeth wanting only<br \/>to squeeze wrenches<br \/>hold granddaughters<br \/>rub<br \/>across the drawers of our toolboxes full of decades of machinist skill<br \/>keeping a roof<br \/>over our head<br \/>we know<br \/>there is always the chance a man<br \/>going through a divorce<br \/>an eviction<br \/>a memory of the cries of the man he had to kill in Vietnam<br \/>or Iraq<br \/>will find his guts gripped so hard inside him by fear and rage he can\u2019t stop his fist<br \/>from busting the jaw of the man<br \/>at the next machine<br \/>and cracking his own life<br \/>in two<br \/>and so<br \/>we come in each morning and knock fists and smile and say,<br \/>\u201cGood morning!\u201d<br \/>like we have won a great victory<br \/>we pass each other in the aisles and knock fists<br \/>smoothly as the turning of the gears of our machines<br \/>putting sons<br \/>through college<br \/>saving daughters<br \/>from cancer<br \/>our fathers may have shaken hands<br \/>but that was when good union jobs bought them houses with 2-car garages<br \/>and no one knew<br \/>the polar icecaps could melt<br \/>as Trump tried to steal the presidency<br \/>and so<br \/>we throw slow-motion punches that end in knuckle taps<br \/>instead of punches<br \/>and grin<br \/>turning to our machines gripping hammers<br \/>like they hold together<br \/>the world.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Phones Full of Tomorrows<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>by Fred Voss<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Gregory<br \/>has heard that the Vice Presidents and President in the office are unhappy<br \/>with the new lathe operators<br \/>\u201cThey\u2019re only putting out 80% production<br \/>They\u2019re looking at their smart phones all the time,\u201d Gregory says to me<br \/>the new lathe operators are all young<br \/>brothers<br \/>or friends from the same East L.A. neighborhood<br \/>wear the same type hoodies<br \/>walk the same talk the same cut their goatees the same<br \/>laugh and knock fists and sing happy birthday<br \/>to each other and blow out birthday cake candles as their lathes sit idle and talk<br \/>about inflation and skyrocketing rents making it hard to survive<br \/>in L.A. and stare at their smart phones<br \/>I hope<br \/>on their phones they are reading about how to save<br \/>the rainforests and melting polar ice shelves and how baristas<br \/>and warehousemen and teachers and delivery truck drivers are forming unions to keep roofs<br \/>over their heads<br \/>I hope they don\u2019t let their lathes sit idle<br \/>because they are lazy<br \/>but because they know<br \/>butterflies are disappearing and lions<br \/>may soon no longer roar at the stars and trees<br \/>are more important than car races<br \/>and skyscrapers<br \/>and a birthday cake candle sometimes worth more<br \/>than a billionaire\u2019s Cadillac<br \/>I hope their phones show them a world full of people<br \/>with one heartbeat <br \/>one moon<br \/>one sun<br \/>one cry at birth and tear over gravestone and miracle<br \/>of rose and waterfall and Mona Lisa smile<br \/>I hope someday they can make their lathe chucks spin and turn down parts<br \/>for windmills<br \/>full of clean energy for their grandchildren<br \/>and the company vice presidents and presidents understand it is okay for workers to slow down<br \/>if it means trees<br \/>can grow taller<br \/>\u201cDon\u2019t worry,\u201d<br \/>I want to tell Gregory<br \/>\u201cIt\u2019s okay if those young guys<br \/>take their hands off their machine handles for a while<br \/>if they can pick up
