14pt;\"><strong>where we got the importance of peas from<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>by Martin Hayes<\/em><\/p>\n<p>there have always been jobs <br \/>ever since we were able to stand up<br \/>and grew hands<br \/>things to clean things to cook <br \/>things to count things to watch<br \/>things to tie up <br \/>like shoes and birthday presents<br \/>things to iron<br \/>like shirts and petticoats <br \/>things that need fixing things that need sorting<br \/>things that need making and things that need breaking<\/p>\n<p>but the jobs I\u2019m talking about<br \/>are the jobs you see the dustman doing<br \/>and the doctor doing<br \/>and the fireman doing<br \/>and the woman at the checkout in the supermarket doing <br \/>and the man behind the counter who brings you your chicken nuggets doing<\/p>\n<p>those jobs are not household jobs<br \/>but jobs that people get paid for<br \/>so that they can pay for a roof <br \/>to go over your head<br \/>or for water and electricity<br \/>to keep you warm<br \/>or for food and fruit<br \/>so you can eat<br \/>or a train set <br \/>or a bicycle <br \/>so you can play<br \/>or a trip to the cinema<br \/>or a new pair of shoes<br \/>so you can live<\/p>\n<p>those jobs<br \/>believe it or not<br \/>we\u2019re created by the pea<\/p>\n<p>I know<br \/>it sounds impossible doesn\u2019t it<br \/>but when a pea is born<br \/>it is born in a pod<br \/>along with lots of other peas<\/p>\n<p>and one day<br \/>it was realised that peas were very special indeed<br \/>so everyone set about trying to get as many peas behind them as possible<br \/>because the more they had<br \/>the more it made them feel safe and warm<\/p>\n<p>so important did the peas become<br \/>that competitions were set up<br \/>to see who could build a pile of peas<br \/>the highest<\/p>\n<p>some were very good at this<br \/>and won competition after competition after competition <br \/>until they had so many peas <br \/>that nobody else had any left<\/p>\n<p>so the winners of the competitions<br \/>created jobs for the losers of the competitions <br \/>to do<\/p>\n<p>and when they\u2019d been done<br \/>they paid them with a few peas<br \/>but only enough<br \/>so that they could eat<br \/>or rent a roof to live under<\/p>\n<p>and when they ate<br \/>or paid for their roof to live under<br \/>they paid for them with peas<\/p>\n<p>the same peas they\u2019d been given <br \/>for doing their jobs<br \/>until they had no peas left again<br \/>until they had done more jobs<br \/>and earned a few more peas<\/p>\n<p>so the winners of the competitions <br \/>always got their peas back<\/p>\n<p>and this has been going on for centuries<br \/>and doesn\u2019t look like<br \/>it will ever change<br \/>in the centuries to come<br \/>unless
