<\/em>Bertolt Brecht<\/p>\n<p>John the Jellyman came to my door;<br \/>John, a.k.a. the Wine- and Vodka-man,<br \/>or John the Cheese, or Leek, or Bean,<br \/>depending on the time of year;<br \/>John, near-neighbour, pensioner,<br \/>and practitioner of a gentle creed.<\/p>\n<p>He had a gift for me today, a jar<br \/>of jelly that he\u2019d made from wild apples<br \/>and wild sloes;<br \/>and he brought me kindness, too,<br \/>asking Was I well and Was there any help<br \/>that I might need?<\/p>\n<p>Labour intensive:<br \/>that\u2019s what his jelly is,<br \/>with days spent in the country,<br \/>sourcing the fruits required,<br \/>and hours in the kitchen,<br \/>achieving the sweet and bitter balance<br \/>and the viscosity<br \/>desired.<\/p>\n<p>The apples came, he told me,<br \/>from an avenue of trees<br \/>that run beside a disused railway track.<br \/>These are trees grown from the pips<br \/>in apple cores<br \/>that long-dead passengers had tossed<br \/>out through the carriage windows<br \/>as they passed.<\/p>\n<p>The sloes he harvested<br \/>from a low-leaning blackthorn copse,<br \/>shaped by prevailing winds from off the sea.<br \/>It yielded its copious berries easily to John,<br \/>as to any forager who goes that way,<br \/>as John, in turn, gave his labour\u2019s fruits<br \/>to me.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, elsewhere, but all too near,<br \/>there are other men, in essence like our kindly John,<br \/>but rendered so unlike by ill-division,<br \/>fear and hate, and history.<br \/>Too readily, they visit their own neighbours\u2019 doors<br \/>and lands, bringing not gifts or help<br \/>but the burn and bomb and bleed and maul and rape<br \/>et cetera of war.<\/p>\n<p>The sum of the world\u2019s wrongs weighs<br \/>the world\u2019s imbalance down, and further down.<br \/>When will the world\u2019s peoples rise,<br \/>resist, rethink, and organise?<\/p>\n<p>John the Jellyman, come again<br \/>and knock my door; come any time.<br \/>You restore in part my heart and hope<br \/>for our poor conflicted humankind.<br \/>From your example, I infer that a brain<br \/>and hand that has learned to kill<br \/>might also learn to build &#8211;<br \/>given a better place and time &#8211;
