Then it falls short, vulnerable from behind.<\/p>\n<p>Has our vision close scrutiny of things<br \/>that may not seem at first significant &#8211;<br \/>things that are routine, or in the dark,<br \/>maybe at the head of leadership,<br \/>or in our ranks, or in the corners<br \/>of our unexamined hearts: <br \/>things that can turn to danger, quick as a wink?<\/p>\n<p>Experience instructs us:<br \/>before we act, think!<\/p>\n<p>Has our vision a future tense, keen<br \/>to look across to tomorrow&#8217;s further shore,<br \/>to envisage what might be different from today,<br \/>and how, in our journey there, we might follow<br \/>the best-considered way?<\/p>\n<p>As a sculptor sees the contours of a statue<br \/>already shaping in an uncut block of stone,<br \/>or as an athlete first conceives a lift, or jump, or throw,<br \/>or run, and holds it within the grasp of mind,<br \/>cherishing it even before the act begins,<br \/>so, as a wise saw says, each last one of us must think<br \/>and feel, even in the welter of our present woes,<br \/>as if we were already citizens of a better land,<br \/>in its early days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>What if that other voice we all know so well responds by saying,<\/em><br \/><em>&#8220;We say no, and we are the state&#8221;? <\/em><br \/><em>Well we say yes \u2013 and we are the people.<\/em><br \/>&#8211; Canon Kenyon Wright<\/p>\n<p>Purblind, some of us let a clown run rings<br \/>around us, unaware his circus act had allies<br \/>massed in his defence, brigade upon brigade<br \/>of adepts in the wars of both position<br \/>and manoeuvre, weaponised.<\/p>\n<p>Not seeing straight, or thinking straight,<br \/>we set our sights on wrong goals,<br \/>and, forsaking loyalties<br \/>and purposes and roots, got bewildernessed<br \/>in ruinous wrong ways.<\/p>\n<p>As the clown banged his tin drum,<br \/>even if we did not see the peril in its signs,<br \/>how did we not hear the horror<br \/>in its beat, its dead-march that betokened<br \/>the breaking of laws and lives,<br \/>as again and again has happened<br \/>in carnivals of evil down the years?<br \/>How did we not smell the reek<br \/>that our enemies&#8217; cruel arrogance exudes?<br \/>Why did we not sense earlier the creeping-up<br \/>and worsening of our fears?<\/p>\n<p>Never as now have our enemies<br \/>so carelessly self-revealed<br \/>their empty souls and ravening greed,<br \/>their two-facedness,<br \/>their lethal recklessness in word and deed.<\/p>\n<p>These hellish handcart drivers,<br \/>untroubled by any fear or shame,<br \/>these crass demolishers of culture,<br \/>these sociopaths in smart suits,<br \/>these devotees of global smash and grab,<br \/>ignorant or contemptuous of history and its gains,<br \/>these strangers to sanity and to truth,<br \/>these bringers of death,<br \/>see how they stand now: exposed as guilty,<br \/>red-handed, few options left, run out of breath.<\/p>\n<p><em>Now&#8217;s the day, and now&#8217;s the hour,<\/em><br \/>Burns wrote, and sang.<br \/>Given our enemies are in disarray,<br \/>disuniting into faction fights, imperilling the safety<br \/>of the state, then we have one clear choice,<br \/>in fact it is imperative:<br \/>as one to make a stand, contesting the continuance<br \/>of their misrule, asserting our claim of right<br \/>to governance, at last, of this beleaguered land.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The most beautiful of all doubts is when the downtrodden<\/em><br \/><em>and despondent raise their heads<\/em><br \/><em>and stop believing in the strength of their oppressors&#8230;<\/em><br \/>&#8211; Bertolt Brecht<\/p>\n<p>In a flash, in a flood, from memory&#8217;s store,<br \/>from a remembered Bible story book,<br \/>a picture comes to mind:<br \/>Pharaoh&#8217;s troops in turmoil, tossed<br \/>with their weapons and their useless chariots<br \/>by the Red Sea&#8217;s power.<\/p>\n<p>Like matchstick men they meet their end<br \/>as walls of water &#8211; that had parted long enough<br \/>to let Moses and his people through &#8211; <br \/>now thunder on their hostile heads.<\/p>\n<p>Now&#8217;s the day, and now&#8217;s the hour,<br \/>for both the victorious living<br \/>and the disarmed dead.<\/p>\n<p>Was this a scene that Brecht envisaged<br \/>when he wrote his poem praising doubt,<br \/>noting how &#8220;invincible armies&#8221;
