Image above: <\/em>Defenestrace<em>, by Karel Svoboda<\/em><\/p>\n<p>but before the mishearing and the frustration, <br \/>can we deal with<\/p>\n<p>the bursting into tears, and whether the poem is <br \/>bursting into tears,<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 those leaky, lachrymose drips, or tears, <br \/>those ripped up, papery bits,<\/p>\n<p>propelled by frustration and closer to <br \/>deforestation, like felling trees<\/p>\n<p>and chopping them into logs, little pieces of what <br \/>they once aspired to,<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 a composite whole reaching up like <br \/>dreamy spires to inspire,<\/p>\n<p>reaching past the highest window in the highest building, <br \/>where a general might resist, momentarily, against clear glass <br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0until <br \/>someone tears away from the crowd<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0and lifts the latch and everyone sees the <br \/>opportunity<\/p>\n<p>which might befall the general, the fate he <br \/>deserves, and surges forward,<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0as if a valve has burst and liquid motion rushes <br \/>at the general who is stiff<\/p>\n<p>as the trunk of a tall tree, whose bark is <br \/>bigger than his bite,<\/p>\n<p>whose bite is a chunk taken out of his uniformed <br \/>arm by a black bear<\/p>\n<p>which has stripped back bark for the sweet <br \/>sapwood, and uses every tool available<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0from the sharpness of his incisors to the <br \/>tearing of his canines,<\/p>\n<p>and naturally he is tearing up at the injustice of <br \/>his predicament for not giving<\/p>\n<p>the right intelligence, for not speaking truth to <br \/>power, for not refusing the yacht,<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 made of 40 cubic metres of mahogany, <br \/>50 cubic metres of cedar<\/p>\n<p>and 50,000 hours of craftmanship, and now here <br \/>he is, framed, and about to<\/p>\n<p>fall 40, maybe 50, maybe 50,000 feet to a landing <br \/>of broken glass and ransacked rubble<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0with the unrelenting view of barren land <br \/>where once a forest grew,<\/p>\n<p>where not even his bones nor blood will fertilise <br \/>the dirt, so what can he do<\/p>\n<p>but scratch with his thumbnail in the <br \/>condensation on the glass a line about <br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 culpability,<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 about tearing up or tearing up, and watch <br \/>the self-pitying rivulets<\/p>\n<p>run down the pane, but of course he has no time <br \/>for any last words, all thought<\/p>\n<p>evaporated, as he rushes towards his shadow, <br \/>leaving a snag of thread<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0from his tearing uniform on the lintel as <br \/>proof he lived, as we consider<\/p>\n<p>the venerable history of defenestration, Queen Jezebel, <br \/>who worshipped a nature god,<\/p>\n<p>defenestrated by her eunuchs, her body eaten by <br \/>dogs, as we consider the irreversible<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0history of deforestation, and write a poem <br \/>bursting into tears or tears having misheard <br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0deforestation for defenestration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Writing a poem bursting into tears having misheard deforestation for defenestration by Lisa Kelly, in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
