style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Under Their Sweaty Wings<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>by Fred Voss<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have had many fathers between tin walls<br \/>one<br \/>who told me to lay a crescent wrench across the jaws of a vice<br \/>if I left the vice untightened at the end of the workday<br \/>so I wouldn\u2019t forget it was loose the next morning and drop a block of steel between its jaws<br \/>and send the teeth of a cutter flying through the steel and have the steel explode<br \/>in my face<br \/>another taught me how to tell what RPM to set a cutter at by putting his palm<br \/>flat against the side of a milling machine head and feeling its vibrations<br \/>like a gypsy fortune-teller<br \/>reading a palm<br \/>another told me of how when he was young he wrestled Gorgeous George to the mat<br \/>in the Olympic Auditorium in downtown L.A.<br \/>lonely<br \/>as a street urchin wandering a concrete machine shop floor trying to learn a skill to make a living<br \/>with a long-necked can of cutting oil and whatever grit I could pull out<br \/>of my guts<br \/>leaving Shakespeare a million miles behind in a graduate school I\u2019d dropped out of<br \/>these were my fathers<br \/>from Lebanon or El Salvador or East L.A. gang or WW2 submarine or prison cell <br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 or circus trapeze<br \/>who\u2019d landed in this machine shop<br \/>too<br \/>fathers with toolboxes they\u2019d worn shiny and smooth with decades of their fingers<br \/>opening and shutting their drawers<br \/>men who\u2019d been shell-shocked divorced shot at who\u2019d cut a finger off or gone mad <br \/>howling at the moon working too many years on graveyard shift<br \/>fathers<br \/>when I hadn\u2019t seen my father in 2 years when my mother<br \/>had disowned me and bikers with metal plates in their legs or heads<br \/>were my only friends<br \/>and I hadn\u2019t yet written one poem to show me the way<br \/>fathers<br \/>who made cutting oil and shiny chips of brass<br \/>seem holy<br \/>giving me old tape measures and sine bars that had crossed the raging Atlantic or a Mexican <br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 desert full of cactus<br \/>like I was the son they never had<br \/>their toolboxes Bibles<br \/>the invention of fire the rolling of the first wheel the hammering of the first nail<br \/>in their twinkling eyes<br \/>taking me under their sweaty wing<br \/>giving me a home where forklifts rolled and Krakatoa 2-ton drop hammers boomed<br \/>and I laced up my steel-toed boots and squared a hardhat<br \/>on my head<br \/>home at last<br \/>where the ticking of a timeclock<br \/>was the mother <br \/>of us all.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Why Beethoven Kept His Fingers On The Piano Keys<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>by Fred Voss<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have stood before time clocks<br \/>for 45 years<br \/>once<br \/>they were big steel boxes with clock hands that ticked like doom<br \/>last judgements<br \/>that said our lives were worth something only if we dropped a timecard<br \/>into them by 6:00 am or 3:30 pm or midnight so they could go<br \/>KA-CHUNK!<br \/>and punch the cards so we could begin our day shift or swing shift or graveyard shift in some factory<br \/>now<br \/>they are computers <br \/>waiting for our finger on a mouse to click the \u201cClock On\u201d box on a screen<br \/>so our lives can have value<br \/>I have seen men just off 3-day drunks<br \/>with fingers shaking so badly from head-shattering hangovers they can barely grip<br \/>a timecard or mouse long enough<br \/>to clock in<br \/>because their wives have left them or threatened them with a carving knife<br \/>or died<br \/>and I have seen men dying to go to Vegas because they feel dead sure Lady Luck is finally ready<br \/>to give them that million-dollar jackpot<br \/>reach down inside themselves for every last bit of willpower they can find<br \/>and clock in<br \/>to keep their feet on solid ground<br \/>and a grip on their lives and walk across a hard concrete floor and turn on their machine <br \/>and know<br \/>they are still worth something<br \/>KA-CHUNK!<br \/>went the timeclock or \u201cclick\u201d<br \/>went the mouse and the men were still in the game<br \/>as blast furnaces spit white-hot flame<br \/>or the twin towers fell down and smoked<br \/>or the sun dimmed in total eclipse over the Amazon river<br \/>still worth something<br \/>as the tigers roared in midnight jungles<br \/>and the stars shone down on thousand-year-old cathedrals<br \/>as they walked toward a machine<br \/>to turn it on and carve tool steel down into an engine ring<br \/>for a rocket into outer space<br \/>or shaved brass down into the bell of a trumpet<br \/>so it could serenade<br \/>a newly-wed bride dancing under the moon<br \/>still worth something<br \/>like Beethoven<br \/>keeping his fingers on the piano keys<br \/>and every man who has ever turned off a
