Cabinet minister\u00a0Andrea Leadsom\u00a0has admitted the\u00a0fracking\u00a0suspension imposed by the government is a \u201cdisappointment\u201d, as the Conservatives face escalating pressure to introduce a permanent ban. Her remarks came as environmental campaigners hailed the announcement of a moratorium on fracking\u00a0in England, declaring it a victory for communities and the climate.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She said it was clear the government \u201cmust impose this moratorium until the science changes\u201d, but added\u00a0shale gas\u00a0is something the UK \u201cwill need for the next several decades\u201d. When pressed on why a permanent ban is not being implemented by No 10, she replied: \u201cBecause this is a huge opportunity for the United Kingdom\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn yesterday dismissed the move\u00a0as an election stunt. \u201cI think it\u2019s what\u2019s called euphemistically a bit of greenwash,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it sounds like fracking would come back on the 13th of December, if they [the Conservatives] were elected back into office. \u201cWe\u2019re quite clear, we will end fracking. We think it\u2019s unnecessary, we think it\u2019s pollutive of ground water systems, and is actually dangerous and has caused serious earth tremors.\u201d<\/p>\n
