little darlings flicker in the surly glow<br \/>of screens, and not yet ripe inside their hoods, are white<br \/>and snug as unpicked beans. they do not know. of typhus,<br \/>or of blight. of shroud, or yoke; of picket or of flail. old<br \/>times of ague, ergot-glut. those hungry times. a race of<br \/>scarecrow-scavengers who stoop their pale route through<br \/>the dust. crops fail, and bodies burn, with every scotched<br \/>intention. nature, not resurgent but insidious. the sap of<br \/>sickness glistens on a lip; an eye becomes an ulcer. yet<br \/>an oddling grace abides, abounds in burdock, sovereign<br \/>bowers of meadowmat and columbine. the ramsons in<br \/>a limestone wood; scent of resin, garlic, pine. fieldfare,<br \/>haunters of the chalk, foraging for song. i followed john.<br \/>the hottest day, and god, god was a big, bronze dynamo<br \/>that drove the world. and god, god was a gavel knocked<br \/>against the sweating temple, night on night. to swim<br \/>the sky&#8217;s dark boiling soak; to suck the oily rag of grief.<br \/>i followed john, i saw the world, i squared its squalor<br \/>with my eye: little village, prettied in an anise air<br \/>that clouds and parts like ouzo. houses there are patient<br \/>and forgetful, full of pride. footpaths deny their<br \/>multitudes, and churches pose for photos. boys on<br \/>bikes are sugar rush and selfies, fumble-tongued<br \/>misogynies. pubs revile a mastiff dog, the plastery<br \/>hands of working men. i woke and followed john.<br \/>summer, gathers in its arrowheads: starlings, jutting<br \/>up from fallow fields like flints. the honey buzzard&#8217;s<br \/>conqueror&#8217;s call;
