Mary Higgins, CEO of Caranua<br \/> The Irish Times, March 20th 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Some applicants will never be happy<br \/>and grievances suit a narrative,<br \/>of the big bad church<br \/>and the big bad state<br \/>and the big bad building<br \/>with the big bad gate.<\/p>\n<p>We ration our compassion,<br \/>while all ye say suits a narrative<br \/>of the big bad state.<\/p>\n<p>We ration our compassion<br \/>but we&#8217;ll give you a couch.<br \/>We ration our compassion<br \/>but we&#8217;ll give you new windows.<\/p>\n<p>We are the keepers<br \/>of the churches\u2019 money.<br \/>As keepers we divvy and we pay<br \/>but not to you directly, we won&#8217;t give you money<br \/>but we &#8216;ll give you new teeth<br \/>a new radiator, a brand new funeral.<br \/>What more could you ask for?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that we want your pain<br \/>to be everlasting,<br \/>but by the same token<br \/>it suits a narrative for ye<br \/>to come on national radio and complain<br \/>and say we have no compassion.<\/p>\n<p>We have oodles of it,<br \/>but we ration our compassion.<br \/>If we give you stuff without humiliating you<br \/>it will be no fun at all.<\/p>\n<p>So fill out that form and then fill another<br \/>and another and another<br \/>and one for your sister<br \/>and one for your brother<br \/>and while you\u2019re at it<br \/>fill one out for your mother.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t listen to the guy who said,<br \/>criminal records are given out<br \/>like holy communion to people in institutions.<br \/>We all know he stole an apple<br \/>otherwise why would he have been there?<\/p>\n<p>Some applicants will never be happy<br \/>and its suits a narrative,<br \/>of the big bad church<br \/>and the big bad state<br \/>and the big bad building<br \/>with the big bad gate.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note:&nbsp;<\/em><em>Survivors of institutional child abuse in Ireland have been told that the state organisation tasked with supporting their health, housing and other needs is to wind down from 1 August 2018.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This poem was first published in&nbsp;Reading the Future: New Writing from Ireland: Celebrating 250 Years of Hodges Figgis.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It Suits a Narrative by Rita Ann Higgins It suits a narrative of the &#8216;big, bad stateand the &#8216;big bad religious congregations&#8217;,&#8211;
