are good men<br \/>with a tool steel square or a finely calibrated micrometer gripped<br \/>in their hands<br \/>or a newly-born granddaughter held<br \/>against their heartbeats<br \/>but they have been fooled by a con artist<br \/>in the white house<br \/>and I look over at the Indian milling machine operators from Guatemala<br \/>and El Salvador<br \/>some of them rode the tops of boxcars into this country<br \/>others<br \/>send money home to mothers living next to sacred rivers<br \/>I give them this country<br \/>they do not engrave their names across their molybdenum-steel wrenches<br \/>and hide them away in toolboxes locked<br \/>with chain and padlock like the white machinists<br \/>they leave them spread across workbenches for other machinists<br \/>to use<br \/>and tape pictures of beautiful waterfalls<br \/>to their toolboxes<br \/>and I look over at the Mexican tool grinders from East L.A. singing mariachi<br \/>they would rather fill the air with beautiful melody<br \/>than wave a red white and blue flag<br \/>I give them the future<br \/>the Gabrielino Indian turret lathe operator whose ancestors lived in this L.A. basin<br \/>a thousand years ago<br \/>standing straight with a truth in his heart Trump can never touch <br \/>I put my hope<br \/>in him<br \/>and any man who needs a job<br \/>a home<br \/>a dream<br \/>I put my hope in the waterfall<br \/>and the song<br \/>and the hammer in the hand<br \/>we white men took this country<br \/>with our guns and our trains and our law books<br \/>but it was never really ours<br \/>its waterfalls<br \/>its waves its condors<br \/>its skies its grass blades and sunsets<br \/>and seas its beauty<br \/>like a wide-open workbench covered with tool steel wrenches free for all<br \/>to use.<\/p>\n<p><em>This poem was partly inspired by&nbsp;by the&nbsp;current horrific&nbsp;immigrant&nbsp;situation surrounding&nbsp;the Mexico\/U.S.
