Standing by her side, also with his hands in the air, was Dan McCann who was also shot dead. A few hundred metres away Sean Savage was to have a similar fate. At the inquest the forensic scientist who examined Sean&#8217;s remains said his killing had been a &#8220;frenzied attack&#8221; There were 29 bullet wounds in his body. All three were unarmed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The following extract from a poem by Jack Mitchell is presented to mark the anniversary, and to mark International Women&#8217;s Day.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">from<\/span>&nbsp;<\/em> <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>GiB, A Modest Exposure<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>by Jack Mitchell<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Deep inside Gibraltar Rock<br \/>There stands a town, or rather mock<br \/>Town, looking pretty<br \/>Like certain parts of Belfast City.<br \/>Here khaki cutthroats learn the art<br \/>Of taking a neighbourhood apart,<br \/>The stealthy approach, the dawn raid,<br \/>Crowd-dispersal with the aid<br \/>Of plastic bullets, CS gas,<br \/>The art of torture (not too crass),<br \/>Of close surveillance, hot pursuit,<br \/>With strict instructions, when you shoot<br \/>Be certain that you shoot to kill.<\/p>\n<p>While, in their caves, at state expense,<br \/>These troglodytes of violence<br \/>Were taught tricks of the terror trade,<br \/>Outside, Gibraltarians paid<br \/>Their taxes and but scant attention<br \/>To this weird underground invention,<br \/>Until one mild March afternoon,<br \/>As balmy as an English June,<br \/>A Sunday, full of peaceful sounds<br \/>And strolling tourists on their rounds,<br \/>There came a change of quality.<br \/>The game became reality.<br \/>At sometime after three o&#8217;clock<br \/>The Thing they harboured in their Rock<br \/>Descended on them; out of the blue \u2013<br \/>Slaughter in Churchill Avenue,<br \/>Panic amongst passers-by<br \/>As three young Irish people die,<\/p>\n<p>Mown down by men with automatics.<br \/>The story goes, they were fanatics,<br \/>Dangerous terrorists, they said.<br \/>Who, the assassins? No \u2013 the dead.<br \/> It&#8217;s sickening to hear them jaw<br \/>Of human rights and rule of law;<br \/>Their favourite view of human rights<br \/>Is down a loaded Browning&#8217;s sights;<br \/>And as for rule of law, by God,<br \/>Whose law ordains a murder squad?<br \/>And murder it was, there on the Rock,<br \/>For all their gales of gusty talk.<br \/>Unarmed, unwarned, the Irish three<br \/>Were gunned down with malicious glee<br \/>By a gang of mindless yahoo brutes,<br \/>Great Britain&#8217;s own Tonton Macoutes.<\/p>\n<p>You meet them in the rugby clubs<br \/>And in idyllic country pubs.<br \/>The same white-collared yobbo clowns<br \/>Molest old folk in market towns.<br \/>All over Britain&#8217;s blasted heath<br \/>They&#8217;re springing up like dragons&#8217; teeth!<br \/>Born bullies, no, not born but spawned<br \/>In Yuppydom&#8217;s malignant pond,<br \/>For twenty years or so matured,<br \/>With Bond and Rambo well manured,<br \/>Until they&#8217;re rotten-ripe and drop<br \/>Into the Special Forces\u2019 lap.<br \/>This concentrates their pith, and purges<br \/>Them of their last human urges,<br \/>Refining them to a noxious pearl<br \/>Within the Army&#8217;s oyster shell.<\/p>\n<p>Picture that dastardly attack,<br \/>How, first, they shot them in the back,<br \/>Straddled them where they lay half dead<br \/>And pumped their bodies full of lead,<br \/>Signing off with a shot in the face,<br \/>The SAS&#8217;s coup d&#8217;isgrace.<br \/>Or was it the other way around?<br \/>Did the victims turn at some slight sound,<br \/>Throwing their hands up to provoke<br \/>The fatal words the Brownings spoke<br \/>Into their ears or to their face?<br \/>Such are the niceties of the case!<br \/>Whichever way, that awful spilling<br \/>Of human life was &#8216;lawful killing&#8217; \u2013<br \/>Or so the inquest said it was:<br \/>They had, they found, broken no laws,<br \/>Were gentlemen all \u2013 all honourable,<br \/>Their slight excess \u2013 exonerable.<br \/>Ah, Gentlemen they were \u2013 indeed,<br \/>Classic specimens of the breed.<br \/>Note how, in their message back to base,<br \/>Miss Farrell&#8217;s name takes pride of place;<br \/>At every stage &#8217;twas Ladies First,<br \/>Mair\u00e9ad received their opening burst \u2013<br \/>Perhaps by way of a bouquet<br \/>For International Women&#8217;s Day?<\/p>\n<p><em>The full poem is an epic poem attacking the system that cloaked the murders, and has an introduction by Gerry Adams and preface by S\u00e9amus Deane.
