one said<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">They looked relieved<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">My little mosque<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">has a big sense of humor<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Not<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">My little mosque has a Persian carpet<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">depicting trees of paradise<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">in the men&rsquo;s section, which you enter<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">through a lovely classical arch<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The women&rsquo;s section features&mdash;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">well, nothing<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Piety dictates that men enter<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">my little mosque through magnificent columns<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Piety dictates<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">that women enter<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">my little mosque<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">through the back alley,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">just past the crack junkie here<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">and over these fallen garbage cans<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">My little mosque used to be democratic<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">with a rotating imam<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">we chose from among us every month<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Now my little mosque has an appointed imam<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">trained abroad<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">No one can dispute his superior knowledge<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I miss having a mosque,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">driving by and seeing cars lining the streets,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">people double-parking, desperate<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">to catch the prayer in time<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I miss noticing, as they dodge across traffic<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">toward the mosque entrance between<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">buses and trucks,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">their long chemises fluttering,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">that trail of gorgeous fabrics Muslims leave,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">gossamer, the colors of hot lava, fantastic shades<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">from the glorious places of the earth<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I miss the stiff, uncomfortable men<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">looking anywhere but at me when they meet me,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">and the double-faced women<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">full of judgment, and their beautiful<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">children shining<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">with my children. I do<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I don&rsquo;t dream of a perfect mosque<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I just want roomfuls of people to kiss every week<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">with the kisses of Prayer and Serenity,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">and a fat, multi-trunked tree<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">collecting us loosely for a minute under<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">its alive and quivering canopy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Marshmallows are banned<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">from my little mosque<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">because they might<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">contain gelatin derived from pork enzymes<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">but banality is not banned,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">and yet verily,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">banality is worse than marshmallows<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">My little mosque<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">is fearful to protect itself<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">from the bricks of bigots<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">through its window<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Doesn&rsquo;t my little mosque know<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">the way to protect its windows<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">is to open its doors?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I know the bricks of bigots<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">are real<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I wish I could protect my little mosque<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">with my body as a shield<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I love my dysfunctional little mosque<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">even though I can&rsquo;t stand it<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I would like to find a little mosque<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">where my Christian grandmother<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">and my Jewish great-uncle the rebbe<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">and my Buddhist cousin<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">and my Hindu neighbor<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">would be as welcome<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">as my staunchly Muslim mom and dad<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">My little mosque is as decrepit<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">as my little heart. Its narrowness<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">is the narrowness in me. Its windows<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">are boarded up like the part of me that prays<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">I went to the mosque<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">when no one was there<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">No One was sweeping up<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">She said: This place is just a place<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Light is everywhere.
